Founded in 1670 and named after King Charles II of England, Charleston is the oldest city in South Carolina and the county seat of Charleston County. With a population of over 132,000, and an area of 127.5 square miles, Charleston is among the top 200 biggest cities in America.

Charleston was officially incorporated as a city only in 1783 after the end of revolutionary war. It is the city where the first fire was shot in the Civil War. The first full Civil War battle occurred on April 2, 1861 at Charleston harbor. Charleston was reconstructed and restored to its original glory after the end of Civil War. It is a city with remarkable history, culture and plenty of sights for visitors to see.

Charleston offers you the chance to actually get on to a WWII Aircraft Carrier. You can tour the historical sites on an old-fashioned carriage or visit the many museums and art centers. Several parks allow you access to outdoor adventure like kayaking, hiking, paddle boarding and riding a canoe. You can even swim with dolphins while enjoying the pristine shores of Charleston.

Famous nation-wide for its cuisine, culture and fashion, this hometown of Stephen Colbert hosts myriad annual cultural events and fairs such as Spoleto Festival USA- a 17-day festival featuring hundreds of artists and museum. Culture and sports are at the core of this city. Education is also given its due importance. The city is served by Charleston County School District and is home to several schools, colleges and universities.

Charleston has long and beautiful summers. With more than 200 sunny days a year, it is perfect for sunbathing and water sports. The July high can reach above 90 degrees while it is comfortable in winters with temperature reaching as low as 39 degrees. Charleston gets 48 inches of rain per year and the summers are usually very humid. To fight off the heat and humidity, an effective air conditioner is what makes a Charleston home enjoyable in summers.
